Newspapers
LaRC preserves extensive holdings of original Louisiana newspapers dating from 1800 to the present.
- Older newspapers are stored offsite and require two business days notice to retrieve.
- Newspapers with current subscriptions are housed onsite.
- Many current newspapers are also available in Howard-Tilton Memorial Library.
A very helpful guide to Louisiana newspapers has been created by Anthony DelRosario of Reference Services. The guide includes descriptions of the extensive newspaper holdings that have been digitized and are available online. The online newspaper guide will help you find and access the digital versions, as well as describe our library's microfilm newspaper holdings. Please be sure to note the guide has two separate tabs for newspapers, one for current newspapers and one for historcial Louisiana newspapers.
Researchers should also be aware of the website for the Louisiana Newspaper Project (LNP) and the Webindex of the Louisiana Newspaper Project. The LNP makes available parish and chronological indices to over 1,700 extant and currently published Louisiana newspapers dating from 1794, the Moniteur de la Louisiane, (the first newspaper printed in French and published in New Orleans), as well as Times- Picayune, the longest-lived Louisiana newspaper, established in 1837. Also available through the LNP are indices to Louisiana newspapers published during the Civil War, Louisiana French newspapers, and Louisiana black newspapers.
